Cover Smother: Ekkah Strap On The Skates & Spin Around Kylie Minogue

Light Years was never my favorite Kylie Minogue album (I know, blasphemy!), but I always loved "Spinning Around" opening it, as after Minogue had fluidly experimented with prog-ish rock and R&B for the latter of the '90s, the glistening cut felt like she was 'coming home' to the dance pop styles she was known for. The single also slipped nicely in with all the disco revival stuff that Jamiroquai and Daft Punk were doing in the early 2000s, and at the time, it was celebratory, as the computer crash doom and 'end-of-days' predictions of Y2K had subsided.

Though softer light reflects off of its mirrorball exterior, Ekkah's rendition of Minogue's glittery disco romp retains all of the tease and entice of the original as it bobs playfully along on chugging basslines and popcorn popping synths, ready to jump start any festivity. The London duo no doubt cull this cover as a nod to the Aussie Showgirl they're opening for at this year's Barclaycard British Summertime gig in London's Hyde Park, but for those of us who will miss the month-long event, it's a nice treat to hear one of Minogue's signature hits given some shine by synth-R&B's newest curators.

While you'll have a harder time accepting that "Spinning Around" was released 14 years ago (!) and was written by none other than Paula Abdul (!!), an easier time you'll have strapping on the roller skates and rimming the rink to Ekkah's breezy recall. Trust me.
