Cover Smother: Soia Puts Janet Jackson's 'Let's Wait Awhile' On Ice

I'm just making a wild guess...but Taiwanese vocalist Soia must also be stoked about Janet Jackson's return this year (one more month...one more month...) since she considered making a cover of "Let's Wait Awhile" would be a good call. Or maybe she just really likes the song and its just a big ol' coincidence? Whatever the case I consider it perfect timing as I feel Jackson's catalog has been long-over due for proper tribute, and what better than to dig a little into the Control tracklist with a more than capable singer?

I became aware of Soia and her producing buddy Mez when they dropped their EP, Mood Swingsa few years back and became immediately impressed with their hybrid jazz n' electro-soul sound.  Now they are back together again, rekindling their singer/producer fire to pay tribute to Miss Jackson. And a proper tribute they give her. While they retain some of "Let's Wait Awhile"'s signature nighttime vibe, their take is not as virginal or as pure as the original as they put the 1986 single on ice, steering it into a sultrier state of mind with Mez jolting the track a bit with spiky percussion and hiccuping bass licks, Soia then topping things off with a sensual croon.

Some Janet purists might find it insulting that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' production technique is all but erased here, but I particularly am pleased they went into a different direction, as their take does immense justice to Jackson's classic ode to abstinence and then some.
